چکیده

[1] Here we present new isotope records derived from snow samples from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica and re-analysis data of the European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts (ERA-40) to explain the connection between the warming of the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean [Jacka and Budd, 1998; Jacobs et al., 2002] and the current cooling of the terrestrial Ross Sea region [Doran et al., 2002a]. Our analysis confirms previous findings that the warming is linked to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) [Kwok and Comiso, 2002a, 2002b; Carleton, 2003; Ribera and Mann, 2003; Turner, 2004], and provides new evidence that the terrestrial cooling is caused by a simultaneous ENSO driven change in atmospheric circulation, sourced in the Amundsen Sea and West Antarctica.

How sensitive are the Pacific–tropical North Atlantic teleconnections to the position and intensity of El Niño-related warming?

the seasonal shift of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone that modulates deep convection over the anomalous SST. This demonstrates the importance of the mean seasonal atmospheric circulation in modulating the remote teleconnections from the central-western Pacific warming in the model. However, it is suggested here that the cooling in the eastern Pacific associated with El Niño Modoki counterac...

An El Niño Primer

El Niño-Southern Oscillation defined El Niño is a local warming of surface waters which takes place in the entire equatorial zone of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean off the Peruvian coast and which affects the atmospheric circulation world-wide. It usually peaks around Christmas, hence the name of the phenomenon: El Niño is Spanish for Christ Child). La Niña refers to the "cold" equivalen...

Evolution of the 2006–2007 El Niño: the role of intraseasonal to interannual time scale dynamics

We describe development of the 2006–2007 El Niño, which started late, ended early and was below average strength. Emphasis is on the interplay between large scale, low frequency (i.e., seasonal-to-interannual time scale) deterministic dynamics and episodic intraseasonal wind forcing in the evolution of the event. Efforts to forecast the El Niño are reviewed, with discussion of factors affecting...
